Knitting Communities Together
Our Passion Our Purpose
Barbara started the Knitting for Plunket and the Community Project in 2009. We are shortly coming up to our 15 year anniversary. When Barbara started we had only a few knitters, mainly staff from the Trust, but it has now expanded to over 600 around New Zealand. The main object for the project was to help keep New Zealand children and babies warm and to give any knitters many who live alone or in a home a purpose and inclusion to help combat social isolation Over this time we have given away thousands of items for babies and children in need from Kaitaia to Invercargill. We have had some very generous help with wool from Steve at Countrywide Yarns, Oliver at Wentworth Distributors, Megan at Woolyarns, Maree at Skeinz and also Crucci Wool. Without their help we wouldn’t have been able to give away so many garments and blankets. Wool donations also come in from the public after they hear about what we do and want to help. Funding from Lions, Rotary and the public helps us to get money in towards courier and postage charges.
13,533 garments donated in 2023
Volunteers
We have over 600 volunteers nationwide who craft goods to donate to babies and children most vulnerable.
Knitting Communities Together
Our project serves to bring communities together, helping those most isolated to be part of an important purpose that adds value to the lives of many.
